Work Room icon Java, Flash, and Javascript

Java, Javascript and Flash are all programming languages that can be used to create interactive educational web pages.

In addition to PHP, described here, there are many other programming languages that can be used to create web pages and web based applications. Here are the three most popular languages for educational web pages and sites...

Java, created by Sun Microsystems, allows you to create programs (applets) that run on your browser as well as create web pages on the server. While programming Java is not for the faint of heart, it does give you a lot of flexibility and power. Many interactive educational web pages are created using Java.

JavaScript can be used within the browser to create simple (and not so simple) web pages. The Mainstrike.com sites contains simple Javascript examples. Google Maps (which uses JavaScript and a lot more) is an example of extreme JavaScript programming.

Another very popular "language" for creating interactive web pages is Flash. While more than just a programming language, it allows you to create rich user experiences.

WebReference, billed as the Webmaster's Reference Library, provides web authoring tips and tutorials.

Annotation

While programming web sites or Java applets are beyond the scope of most teachers, your students could be another matter. If blooming Webmasters attend you school, tell them about the possibilities; you will be helping them towards employment and they will help you stay on the cutting edge.
