First, gather items for your basic toolkit: Internet connectivity; computing power for multimedia and networking capabilities; web server & browser software for accessing the Web; and messaging and word processing software.
In addition, we recommend:
- Multimedia and teleconferencing appliances (video cameras, mikes and speakers, video & audio editing software, CD/DVD or Blu-ray burner).
- Scanners and specialized equipment can help your students transfer rich offline project work to online multimedia portfolios for sharing their products with others.
- For advanced work you might explore the purchase of a music synthesizer or looping software to learn about the commonalities between physics and music and to add soundtracks for multimedia products. Remote sensing toolkits can help students input investigative data directly online, like professional scientists.
- Upgraded server & client software and networks with industrial-strength security, a clear implementation manual, easy site administration, built-in HTML authoring and editing, and access to several multimedia clients for full interoperability with all Web resources.
- As the multimedia capabilities of the Web have expanded, newer software tools or plug-ins may be required to view and interact with online contents. Your browser should also support Java. In the Multimedia Room are descriptions of most of these tools. Vendors often offer them free to educators if they are not already bundled as plug-ins in your browser.
