Looking for an alternative to the cost and licensing issues of Microsoft Office. Check out open source alternatives like OpenOffice.org.
OpenOffice.org is a suite composed of several applications useful for common office tasks and is distributed as Open Source Software (i.e., free). OpenOffice.org features include a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation application, a vector graphics editor, a WYSISYG HTML editor, a Math Formula editor, and can manage long documents (such as books, compositions, studies, articles, etc.) through a special master document function. It is compatible, both in saving and loading files, with other office formats, including the Microsoft Office formats.
The best part is that is available at NO COST other than what you spend for downloading it through the Internet.
The OpenOffice Documentation Project provides a place to find and exchange documentation, additional dictionaries, help with using OpenOffice.org, news, and much more about the OpenOffice.org Suite, Open Source, and Free Software in general. Check out their FAQ and HOW-TO's sections!
Annotation
"Open Source" projects are now a viable alternative to traditional software offerings. Many state and local government agencies have found them to be of high quality and much less expensive to buy and service that the traditional alternatives.
Worth checking out.
