Internet search sites designed specifically for students and younger children...

KidsClick! is a Web search engine for kids which covers both school subjects and entertainment. The strength of this search portal is that the resource links are few and high quality. Moreover, the readability level of the information makes the content more accessible for many readers. Created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System in New York state, it is currently maintained by the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University.

Google offers a Safe Site search option. It's worth taking a few minutes and setting this option on every computer students will be using.

Another safe avenue for allowing students to do their own searches of discovery is to search one of the larger content sites, like the Discovery Channel or PBS. Students can search large volumes of content with little chance of encountering inappropriate material.

Grokker helps sort the outcomes of a search into 3D visualizations with some common element. The filtering is not as good as other sites, but would be appropriate for older (grades 7-12) students.

Annotation

Most search services do not exert quality control. Educational search providers will screen for inappropriate contents but the methods are not foolproof.

Our regret is that there are not more search sites available for younger students.
