There are a number of resources to help students (and their parents) best use the Internet...

Farallon is sponsoring a computer camp for students and parents in inner-city locales where home use is limited. Students can learn about the basic tools for using the Internet.

The National Student Research Center highlights research methods and online databases.

In addition to site listings, The Internet for Your Kids empowers students to use telecommunications tools, conduct research and investigations and set up their own publication services, musical compositions and newsgroups.

The Internet Public Library has special sections for both teenagers and younger kids, including topics like Frequently Asked Embarrassing Questions, homework help, science fair projects, and learning HTML.

PBS has created a few Web pages, especially for young children, to learn about navigating the Internet and earn a Driver's License. The pages are appealing without being patronizing. And, unlike so many sites ostensibly for young children, they can actually read and interact with these pages all by themselves.

The Library of Congress has prepared Internet Guides and courseware. Since the Library of Congress employs the best librarians in the United States, the quality and accuracy of these materials is excellent. For the first time students anywhere can access the amazing collections at the LOC. Don't pass up this opportunity.

Annotation

These distant education capacities help student groups in those regions where training is not available locally and individual students who are considering pursuing a career in this field. We recommend Internet for Kids as a must purchase; very well- designed, it will save you an enormous amount of time in bringing students uptospeed on basic telecommunications skills. The contents are enjoyable too!
