Annotation
A long tradition in the artificial intelligence community has been devoted to treating the computer as a learning partner. Until recently, the resulting software has been self-contained. New applications are emerging for telecommunications, especially for distant education. This reference is one example of that effort. Since these tools can operate matter-of-factly, teachers sometimes regard them as impersonal. Such aides, however, may be appropriate in certain settings, such as bilingual classrooms in which heterogeneity can overwhelm one teacher or classes in adult education.
