The Well is one of the original community networks...

The Well is one of the original community networks. It springs from the San Francisco Bay Area. While not devoted to education especially, visiting the site will convey the flavor of networked communities among its greatest devotees.

The Community Network Movement provides information, resources and presentations on comunity networks. According to their site, "There is no such thing as a poor community. ... Often, however, the human resources are not appreciated or utilized, partly because people do not have information about each other and about what their neighborhood has to offer."

Estimates of community networks were cited as 600 in 1995-96. Listings and exemplars can be found at the NCSA and Usacitylink Web sites.

Annotation

The founder of the Well, Howard Rheingold, is an iconoclast, often cited in the media. For him networking=community.
