The Community Network in the Charlotte NC region has received awards for its comprehensiveness. Components include education and libraries, weather, history, transport, business and employment,human services, government, arts and sports and neighborhood news.Exciting events, such as the appearance of the Hale-Bopp comet, are updated frequently. Wouldn't it be amazing if a whole civic community were learning about one phenomenon!
A model for tackling community-wide literacy is available at LCBC. Similarly, READ-IN shows how to plan an exciting one-day intensive focus on reading and offers access to motivating celebrities.
The Great Lakes net is a good model for a regional network with resources from several states. Regionalism is an important concept in geography now. Note the appearance of the Native American Telecommunications Networks (radio, tv, and Internet); hopefully, it will reduce the isolation experienced by many rural communities.
In a different vein, if your students wish to serve as volunteers in almost any state, opportunities are provided at Servenet. Volunteerism is a "Good Thing".
