The National Science Foundation along with ARPA and NASA has embarked on an ambitious digital libraries project, composed of consortia based at different universities. Each has a particular focus and most groups are exploring technical issues to enhance capacities of virtual libraries.

At the University of Michigan faculty have been committed to telecommunications for younger students for many years. Their site includes resources for science education, such as weather databases, housed elsewhere in this library. At this particular site a space has been constructed just like a real children's library, including story hours for networked interaction. This virtual library also contains a new division for teens, a reference desk, Web resources, classroom lessons, and an exhibit hall. For more detailed instructions about the division for younger students send e-mail to ipl.moo@umich.edu. A new site (ipl.org) sponsors space for students to publish book reviews and voice opinions on discussion topics, related to literature.A QuickTime Virtual Reality feature has been added for navigating about exhibits.

We should all put our hands together for the NSF and University of Michigan who amidst all the crucial technical issues chose to address the needs of youngsters, too.
