The National Center for Educational Outcomes, housed at the University of Minnesota, has developed an excellent Web site about issues and with references for several domains, such as media literacy, ESL, social studies and students with disabilities. The links for special education students, in particular, are excellent and hard to find at other locations. Moreover, one focus is on the use of technology to assist in the assessment process but the site, unlike the many software vendors, is not "pushing" a particular brand.
It turns out to be difficult to conduct a general "search" on this topic, because of the nature of the current search engines so this site will be an excellent jumpstart.
Finally, this site does not emphasize hardware. For additional information, see also other entries within this Instructional Media Center in which the phrase "special education" works as a search phrase.
Assessment in Special Education is a very complex topic because each student's progress is reviewed individually. For legal reasons assessment oftens requires a considerable paperwork burden and coordination among many staff and allied agency personnel. One advantage of telecommunications for Special Education, then, is the capability to streamline the process without losing sight of individual student needs. Use this media to save time for instruction!
