"Strong Families, Strong Schools" is the title of one publication from the DOEducation, downloadable at no cost from the first site. It contains 8 nuggets of special activities for strengthening school-home partnering. The series,"Helping Your Child", supplies advice for specific subjects, such as science and geography, and community opportunities, such as applying math at the supermarket. Other publications give information about finding funds for college, consumer guides, and, of course, pending legislation. Parents could even receive the updates from edinfo@inet.ed.gov. and join the BackToSchool satellite meetings.A BackToSchool activity kit for families can be downloaded from /Family/agbts. A followup resource guide explains the importance and strategies for involving parents and grandparents and the students' whole community web in the work of schools.One publication Ideabook is targeted to Title I schools. Models of effective Parent Centers for early childhood education can be found at ed.gov,also.

The National Parenting Center and National Parenting Information Network offer general resources.The national PTA has issued parent involvement standards in schools.These could be incorporated into school handbooks. The National Association for the Education of Young Children's publications and Worldvillage's Ideabox offer good advice about the interface between the home and school, especially for parents new to schools with very young children.

Great Grandparents! has suggestions to help grandparents build a strong, long-lasting relationship with their grandchildren, whether they live near or far. Seems to be good advice for all of us to follow.

The Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley has set up a portal for parents which offers tips for involvement in schools and for math and science activities at home which reinforce classroom skills.
