With sponsorship by Bell Atlantic and Clara Vista the Federal Emergency Management Agency has added a section "For Kids". Its goal is to raise sensitivity about preparing for and coping with natural disasters. The activities include a coloring book and Hurricane House with clickable objects that could prove hazardous.Both cognitive links for additional information and affective links for emotional support are given.
The Fire Protection agency's site features Sparky the Dog. In additional to readable information for upper elementary school-aged children, students can navigate a fire truck through the quickest route to a fire.

Children can be very frightened when disaster strikes. Preparedness and support afterwards can help remedy this fear. Ironically, much of the online data available for students is courtesy of agencies whose major mission is disaster control.Volcanic eruptions, floods, earthquakes, fires provide enriching data online but they can also stimulate unnecessary anxiety. This site makes a very positive contribution.
