The Mega-math resources, provided by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is considered to be one of the best math sites on the Web by math teachers.

Webmath has adopted a fanciful context for traditional problems. This site is composed of many math "fill-in-forms" into which you can type the math problem you're working on. The user submits a problem, such as what would a house and tree look like if you were traveling the speed of light, and the site offers the solution, many times with a graph or picture. A good refresher for teachers, too.

The Geometry Center at the University of Minnesota (see apps and gallery) offers Java applets and interactivity for students to construct graphical displays after solving math formulae. Not necessarily creative, the graphical representation is a helpful visualization tool. It's funding is problematical.

Similarly, Suremath is designed to cultivate problem-solving skills in algebra, chemistry or physics. It is a clear and non-intimidating site.

Word Problems is a collection of traditional "story" problems, wrapped in a "hip" context--a motivator for students who ask, "Why do we study this math stuff?"

Science Gems in Math covers 23 topics--something for most everyone.

Seeing Math and PBS TeacherLine, along with Ready to Teach Algebra and Close Support combines content modules in algebra with professional development for sustained learning environments. Various applets can be used to customize the modules. All of the content is very clear.

Annotation

The approach to mathematics in environmental studies projects varies widely; some concentrate on formulae and others on practical problem-solving. At these sites challenging problems which can be integrated into such units are posed. They can be assigned individually to students who finish other work.
