CIESIN, for advanced students, illustrates an integrated earth and population demographics approach. It maintains a large mailing list; email to hdgec@ciesin.org. Recently, CIESIN was designated the home for environmental treaties around our globe(SEDAC). These treaties round out student research projects. The awea site coordinates student work on wind energy. The OMSI site (Oregon Musuem of Science and Technology)explains the way fountains work--another take on water systems. All instructions are supplied for students to construct their own fountain. Attaining a specialized teaching certificate in science and technology studies involved mounting an exhibit, complete with thumbnails, for touring a hole in the ozone layer. The University of Delaware has developed a new Deepsea site, complete with sound effects. For information about drought systems see the Drought database.
For a simulation of purifying water look at Life in a Fishbowl.
Photosynthesis offers public service opportunities to students who are passionate about purifying the air. Via educational briefings students can learn about educating their community in topics such as global arming.
The Ocean Science Education Institute deploys high quality curriculum and labs for middle school students by collaboration among universities, science centers, and teachers.
Understanding water at the molecular level can be found at CAMPWS.
Tidal forces, so powerful, can be studied easily at NOAA.
Middle school students can increase their awareness and unerstaning of coastal, estuaries, tides and ocean issues.
Per force the study of the environment involves systems and subsystems. It may not be possible in any one year to complete more than two or three telecommunication projects in this domain. However, it is important to lay the foundation and gradually expand students' understanding of systems; for that at least two projects should be undertaken.
